Getting Started.

Biographies:

Please refer to biography outline and rules. You cannot begin to RP unless you have an approved biography in hand.

Beginning RP:

Right, so you've decided you want to RP, but you aren't really sure what to do? The only Role Play you'd ever heard of was the stuff angsty teenagers did in their basements while their parents frantically rang therapists comparing prices? Maybe you are one of those angsty teens and you're completely lost without a twenty sided die?

Well I'm here to help.

Firstly you need an approved character bio. If you don't have one then go here, it's all the information you need about getting one done.

Now, you should have your character all done, approved by the designated Admin. Yes? Great. Lets move on then.

The first thing to understand about Role Playing at Broken World is how to go about it. Now here at BW, we use a text based form of RP. Which is exactly what it sounds like, you play a role (your character) by writing posts, short interactive stories if you will involving your character and whoever you were lucky enough to find to RP with you.

So you've got your character done, you've read and understood all the rules, you've got the etiquette down and now you want to get out there and start RPing. But you have no idea how to get your foot in the door?

Well never fear I have a few tried and tested techniques to get those RPs started!

First thing you can do, is post a little IC (in character) introduction on one of the RP Boards. Putting 'anyone can join' in the title of the post works wonders. You'll find bored RPers whipping out and dusting off characters they haven't used in weeks to come play with you.

Perhaps you have an awesome idea for your first RP and you want a more structured approach? Well then, post on the RP Discussion Board outlining your idea and ask for someone to come join you. Simple as that.

And if all else fails, you can always leave a short OOC post on one of the existing threads asking if you can join in. People are usually flexible when it comes to RPs and most have room for one extra player, you!

So now we've gotten you involved in an RP, but perhaps your writing skills are a little rusty. Well no problem, I can help you out there as well. *dips into her magic hat of tips and tricks*

Tip One: Write in third person past tense. e.g.:

"Arcan Wills, M'Hael of the Black Tower, legendary short man and all round bad guy, walked into the room like he owned it. Sweeping back his long black cape he indulged in maniacal laughter as he squished poor helpless Aes Sedai beneath his cruel boot heel."

Tip Two: Adjectives and adverbs are your friend. For example compare these two excepts:

"Billy-Bob fell over."

"Billy-Bob was not what one would call the most graceful of men, his stride was often compared to that of a drunk rhino and could be just as destructive. In a particularly fine mood and imbibed with perhaps a little too much ale, the rather large lad attempted a kind of bizarre jig which resulted in a resounding thud as his great oafish feet tangled beneath him and brought him down faster than trolloc attempting a river dance."

See what I mean? Metaphors, similes, adjectives, adverbs, these are the spice of life, or in this case, RPs.

Tip Three: Try to make ordinary events unusual.

Why not have that novice set her instructors dress on fire in her second OP class? Or have that battle hardened veteran soldier wake up after a hard night's drinking and gambling with his shoes missing and a wedding ring on his left hand? What would a Wolf kin do when stuck babysitting a teething pup? Get creative, after all that's what we're all here for.

Tip Four: Have a look at the existing threads, there are always heaps of great RPs around and they might give you a few useful pointers on your way to RP greatness.

Tip Five: Finally, get out there and RP. Practice makes perfect!
